Vancouver and Toronto supporters weigh costs against once-in-a-lifetime opportunity
Soccer fans in Vancouver and Toronto are expressing mixed reactions to Tuesday's federal budget announcement allocating an additional $100 million toward hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup, bringing total federal investment to over $320 million for the two Canadian host cities.
According to Bob Mackin's reporting in The Breaker, the Carney government's budget earmarks $57 million through March and $43 million from April onward. The funding will be spread across six federal departments: Canadian Heritage, RCMP, Canada Border Services Agency, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, Canadian Air Transport Security Authority, and Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
"This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity," said Markus Oberhausen, a Vancouver Whitecaps season ticket holder. "The World Cup will put our cities on the global stage and inspire a whole new generation of Canadian soccer players. The investment is worth it."
Toronto FC supporter Amanda Rodriguez agrees. "People forget the economic benefits – hotels, restaurants, tourism. This money will come back to our communities many times over."
However, not all fans are convinced the escalating costs are justified. Mackin's report notes that last year's federal commitments of $116 million to Vancouver and $104 million to Toronto have now been supplemented with this latest injection, raising questions about budget management.
"Where does it end?" asked Vancouver resident Martin Webber. "We were told the initial funding would cover everything. Now they need another hundred million? What happens if they come back asking for more?"
Critics point to ongoing infrastructure challenges in both cities, from housing affordability to transit upgrades, suggesting taxpayer dollars might be better spent on local priorities.
The Breaker also reported that the B.C. government was caught off-guard by the announcement, raising concerns about coordination between levels of government.
Still, many fans remain optimistic about June 2026, when the world's biggest sporting event arrives in North America. Vancouver's BC Place and Toronto's BMO Field will host multiple matches in the expanded 48-team tournament, shared between Canada, the United States, and Mexico.
"We've waited so long for this," said Toronto supporter James Wilson. "Yes, it's expensive, but hosting the World Cup is about more than money. It's about showing the world what Canada can do."
The budget requires House of Commons approval before funds are released.
