Some of the most transformative people in business are those who once believed they were “too much” too curious, too unconventional, too intense or simply too full of ideas.

In her reflections on leadership, AI and commercial value, Amy K Thomson explores what happens when these individuals suppress the very qualities that make them exceptional. She describes them as “Masked Visionaries” successful founders, executives and creators who have learned to fit conventional environments while quietly editing parts of themselves.

According to Thomson, that editing can come at a cost. “When leaders constantly filter their natural thinking, organizations can lose access to the very intelligence that made those leaders valuable.”

Her message is particularly relevant as businesses navigate a rapidly changing world. Authentic leadership, she argues, should not be confused with saying everything one thinks or rejecting structure. Instead, it requires understanding how an individual naturally creates value and learning to apply that strength deliberately.

Thomson also turns attention to artificial intelligence and the future of work. Rather than asking only what AI can accomplish, she proposes a more human question: “What do humans should stop doing because AI exists?” Her argument is that technology should create greater space for human judgment, creativity, empathy, relationships, curiosity and vision.

The same philosophy extends to what she calls the “hidden ROI of authenticity.” Curiosity, intuition, self-awareness and unconventional thinking may not appear on a balance sheet, yet they can lead to better decisions, new markets, innovative solutions and previously unseen opportunities.

“Perhaps some of the greatest untapped assets in modern business aren't hidden in technology, markets or spreadsheets. They are hidden inside people,” Thomson writes.

At the heart of these ideas is a belief in human potential. Whether through authentic leadership, thoughtful AI adoption or deeper self-discovery, Thomson challenges organizations to look beyond conventional measures of value and recognize the possibilities within their people.

Her vision ultimately offers a hopeful message: businesses do not have to choose between performance and humanity. By creating environments where people can think differently, lead authentically and use technology to amplify rather than diminish human agency, organizations can unlock new possibilities and positively change the lives of the people they serve.
