As artificial intelligence reshapes workplaces, the most important question may not be what machines can do, but what humans should stop doing because AI exists.
For decades, businesses have encouraged people to work more like machines: follow processes, increase output, standardize performance and remove variation. AI now performs many of these repetitive, information-heavy tasks at extraordinary speed, creating an opportunity to rethink how human talent is used.
The emerging challenge is not simply adopting AI, but redesigning work around it. Without that shift, organizations risk adding more dashboards, notifications, generated information and digital tools to already overloaded employees.
The alternative is human-AI alignment: designing systems that amplify human agency rather than forcing people to operate like machines.
The principle is straightforward: “human attention is extraordinarily valuable.” Every hour a strategist spends reorganizing information is time that could have been devoted to strategy. Every afternoon a creative founder spends on repetitive administration is time that could have been spent imagining new possibilities.
Organizations can therefore begin by asking a different question: “What do we want our humans to have more capacity to be human for?”
The answers may include negotiation, empathy, discernment, creativity, relationship-building, pattern recognition, courageous conversations and vision.
AI can process vast amounts of information and generate possibilities quickly, but human judgment remains central to deciding what matters and what deserves action. As I put it, “A human still determines which possibility is worth pursuing.”
This distinction offers a more positive vision for the AI era. Rather than making people compete against machines by working faster, technology can remove mechanical burdens and create space for uniquely human strengths.
The goal is not to make humans more machine-like. It is to give people greater freedom to think, create, connect and lead.
The most meaningful AI transformation, therefore, may be less about replacing human intelligence than rediscovering its value. By thoughtfully redesigning workflows, organizations can create workplaces where technology supports people—and where people have more capacity to do work that genuinely matters.
That future offers reason for optimism: AI can become not a force that diminishes human agency, but a tool that gives it room to grow.
