Today marks REAL ID Day in the United States, a timely reminder for travelers to check if they’re prepared for upcoming changes in domestic air travel identification requirements. The REAL ID Act, passed in 2005, aims to enhance national security by introducing stricter standards for government-issued IDs. Though the rollout has faced numerous delays, new rules are now set to take full effect by May 7, 2025, with a phased approach potentially extending implementation to May 2027.

REAL IDs feature added security measures—such as barcodes and star symbols—to help verify identity and prevent fraud. While it’s still legal to use a standard driver’s license at airports for now, that won’t be the case for much longer. If you plan to fly within the U.S. in the future, a REAL ID-compliant form of identification (or an alternative like a passport or Global Entry card) will be essential.

Some states also offer an Enhanced ID, which allows land or sea travel to Canada and Mexico without a passport—a handy feature for border-hopping travelers.

What About Canadians?
Canadians transiting through or flying domestically within the U.S. still require a valid passport or NEXUS card—REAL ID is not applicable to foreign nationals. However, Canadians who hold dual citizenship or reside in the U.S. may need to ensure their U.S. ID is REAL ID-compliant to board domestic flights or access federal facilities.

If you're not sure whether your current ID qualifies, visit your local DMV or check the Department of Homeland Security website for details. Don’t wait until the last minute—upgrading your ID is a quick but essential step to stay travel-ready.

Are you planning any trips that will require REAL ID soon?
