On May 7, 2025, global attention turns to Brussels, Belgium, for the signature event of World Press Freedom Day: “Reporting in the Brave New World – The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media.” Held at the BOZAR Centre for Fine Arts, this hybrid international congress will run from 9:30 am to 6:30 pm, convening journalists, policymakers, academics, and media professionals to examine the double-edged role of AI in modern journalism.
As artificial intelligence continues to revolutionize newsrooms, its potential to support investigative journalism, multilingual reporting, and real-time fact-checking is undeniable. Yet, these benefits are shadowed by growing concerns. From algorithmic bias and deepfakes to AI-fueled disinformation and surveillance, the technology also poses serious threats to press freedom and the safety of journalists worldwide.
This year's event will address these critical issues under the lens of safeguarding journalism as a public good in the digital age. In addition to high-level plenaries, the event will feature the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize Ceremony, honouring exceptional courage and commitment in the face of adversity.
Participants will explore how to ensure that AI supports, rather than erodes, journalistic integrity, human rights, and democratic values. The discussions will also address fair remuneration for content in AI-powered business models and the sustainability of independent media.
World Press Freedom Day 2025 is not just a commemoration—it’s a call to action for responsible innovation and global solidarity.
