Zimbabwe, Africa’s largest producer of lithium, is taking a significant step toward strengthening its position in the global electric vehicle (EV) supply chain with the launch of a new rail corridor for lithium exports. The initiative is designed to improve the movement of lithium concentrate from the Gwanda Lithium Mine to the Port of Maputo in Mozambique, reducing transport costs while improving export efficiency.
The new logistics route is the result of a partnership between the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ), the Beitbridge Bulawayo Railway (BBR), and logistics company Silvergill. By shifting more cargo from road to rail, Zimbabwe aims to create a more reliable and cost-effective export system for one of the world's most in-demand battery minerals.
Lithium has become an essential resource in the global transition to cleaner energy, powering rechargeable batteries used in electric vehicles, smartphones, and renewable energy storage systems. As demand continues to rise, efficient transport infrastructure is becoming just as important as mining itself.
Zimbabwe has attracted billions of dollars in investment into its lithium industry since 2021 and has become a major supplier of spodumene concentrate to China. The country is also pursuing policies that encourage greater local processing, with long-term ambitions to export higher-value lithium products rather than raw materials alone.
The new corridor is expected to benefit more than just exporters. Increased rail freight could help revive Zimbabwe's rail network, create jobs in transport and logistics, and reduce heavy truck traffic on major highways. These improvements have the potential to strengthen regional trade while supporting economic development across Southern Africa.
