In today’s globalized economy, clarity and transparency are more important than ever when it comes to labeling goods and services. Whether you're a local producer, small business owner, or service provider, consumers want to know where their purchases are coming from—and if they meet Canadian standards. Here's a helpful guide to navigating product labels so that your offerings stand out for all the right reasons.
Use Precise Canadian Labelling
If your product is entirely or nearly entirely made in Canada, you may qualify to use “Product of Canada.” This means all or almost all ingredients and processing occur within the country. If your product includes imported ingredients but is still processed here, consider the “Made in Canada” label—just be sure to clearly mention imported ingredients on the packaging.
Terms like “100% Canadian” or “Canadian Content” can also be used, but should be backed by accurate data. Misleading claims can damage consumer trust and may be subject to regulatory action.
Utilize Recognizable Canadian Symbols
A maple leaf symbol may suggest Canadian origin, but alone it doesn’t always mean a product was made here. Pair it with text like “Product of Canada” or “Made in Canada” to avoid confusion.
Look for or use the Canada Organic logo if your organic goods meet Canadian certification standards. The inspection legend, found on meat and dairy products, is another key sign of compliance with Canadian food safety regulations.
Understand and Apply Canadian Grades
When applicable, include Canadian grade labels (like Canada No. 1 or Canada A) for fresh produce and meats. These grades assure consumers of quality and help build trust in your brand.
Finally, if your product includes imported content, clearly identify the country of origin. This not only keeps you compliant, but respects your customer’s right to informed choices.
