Jane and Lisa had worked side by side in the same office for an entire decade—no issues, no drama, just good colleagues. Jane was always the one bringing a packed lunch or a snack to share, while Lisa would eat out. But everything changed after Jane signed up for a gourmet cooking and baking class last month.

Suddenly, her lunches became culinary masterpieces: Seared Salmon with Avocado-Corn Salsa and Wild Rice, Mushroom and Truffle Risotto with Arugula Side Salad, and Prosciutto-Wrapped Chicken with Quinoa Salad, among others. Plus, she baked an array of decadent desserts—Salted Caramel Chocolate Tartlets, Lavender-Honey Scones with Lemon Glaze, Pistachio and Rosewater Baklava Bites—that she was hoping to share with all her coworkers.

The first two weeks, everything seemed fine. Jane would pack a big portion of lunch for herself and some treats to share, imaging serving her gourmet goods with coffee during the afternoon break. However, the last three days, Jane noticed something odd happening. Some of her carefully packed lunches seemed to be half-eaten by lunchtime—sometimes before she even had a chance to take one bite.

Also her desserts, especially her prized tartlets and baklava bites, kept decreasing in numbers, one or two at a time. The most frustrating part? No one in the office would admit to doing it. She even placed a large sign over her offerings with her name and phone number on it, just in case someone was really desperate to try one.

Jane’s initial thought was that perhaps the janitor or even some of the delivery drivers might be taking a small amounts here and there. But then she started noticing changes in her coworker Lisa’s behavior. Lisa, who had always been friendly and easy-going, had recently been sneaking out to the “washroom” at random parts of the day—and returning with crumbs on her shirt or stains on her sleeves.

Jane noticed that Lisa was also unusually curious about her lunches, often asking for details as soon as Jane arrived at the office each morning. While Jane never saw Lisa take her food outright, she began to suspect that Lisa might be sneaking a spoonful or two of her gourmet salmon or risotto during her frequent "bathroom" breaks. Jane’s frustration mounted as she realized whoever was taking small, sneaky tastes of her meals, did not leave her enough for a complete meal by lunchtime.

Jane had always been generous, bringing plenty of delicious food to share with her colleagues, but now she started to question whether Lisa’s snacking habits were crossing a line. There’s a difference between sharing a quick bite with permission and what felt like covert snack theft, especially when Jane lovingly prepared her meals and was generous with her treats. Though she wanted to avoid workplace drama over something as frivolous as this, Jane couldn’t ignore Lisa’s odd behaviour any longer.

When Jane finally mustered the courage to confront Lisa about the disappearing gourmet meals, things quickly spiraled. Lisa initially denied everything, acting innocent and claiming she didn’t take anything. But when Jane persisted, Lisa suddenly started screaming that “this cooking wasn’t so great anyway” and that she was only eating it to “help Jane out” and “save her from wasting her effort.”

Jane yelled back that she was never bringing anything to share again, which left the entire office feeling disappointed and sad. Then, without warning, Lisa stormed into the breakroom, grabbed a handful of Jane’s prized Baklava, and—suddenly—hucked it right in Jane’s face! Sticky, sweet chaos erupted as Jane sputtered, wiping sugar off her glasses, and declared again with even more force that she’d “never bring another treat to this workplace again.” The room fell silent. Now, the question remains: Who is the Karen?

Who is the Karen?

  • A. Lisa – The sneaky snacker, secretly helping herself to Jane’s gourmet meals
  • B. Jane – Overreacting and jumping to conclusions about her coworker while punishing the entire office for the actions of one
  • C. The Office – Unknowingly caught in a lunch dispute now going to be deprived of sweets by the action of one (or was it two)
