VANCOUVER, BC – Soccer history will be made at BC Place on Wednesday, October 1, as Vancouver Whitecaps FC hosts Vancouver FC of Langley in the 2025 TELUS Canadian Championship Final. This marks the first competitive match between two Metro Vancouver teams in club history, with just 40 kilometres separating BC Place from Vancouver FC's home at Willoughby Community Park.
The matchup carries significant weight for both clubs. Whitecaps FC enters as three-time defending Canadian champions, seeking to become the first team to capture four consecutive titles since the Canadian Premier League's introduction. Vancouver FC, launched in 2022 and competing in their third CPL season, represents the ambitious growth of professional soccer in British Columbia.
"Congratulations to head coach Martin Nash and the entire Vancouver FC organization," said Axel Schuster, Vancouver Whitecaps FC sporting director. "We're very much looking forward to our first-ever match against them, especially with a trophy on the line. The opportunity to lift the Voyageurs Cup for a fourth consecutive year, in a derby, will be something truly special."
The connection between these clubs runs deeper than geography. Vancouver FC head coach Martin Nash is a former Whitecaps captain, ranking sixth all-time in appearances and fourth in assists for the MLS side. At least nine current Vancouver FC players developed through the Whitecaps FC BMO Academy System, including goalkeeper Callum Irving and forwards Terran Campbell and Jay Herdman. The roster also features former Whitecaps midfielder Nicolás Mezquida and Hugo Mbongue, brother of current Whitecaps midfielder Ralph Priso.
Beyond local bragging rights, the winner earns qualification for the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup, featuring North America's elite clubs. Whitecaps FC made a memorable run to this year's Concacaf Champions Cup final, reaching second in the continental rankings before falling to Cruz Azul. Currently ranked sixth in Concacaf, they face 107th-ranked Vancouver FC in what promises to be David versus Goliath encounter.
The match also serves the broader soccer community, with Whitecaps FC donating $1 from every ticket to BC Soccer as part of their development partnership. Tickets for the TELUS Canadian Championship Final start at under $20 (plus applicable taxes and service charges) and are available for purchase at ticketmaster.ca/whitecaps. This derby represents more than a final – it's a celebration of Metro Vancouver's growing soccer landscape and the culmination of grassroots development meeting professional excellence on the biggest stage in Canadian soccer.
