In a bold move to solidify Canada’s position as a global AI leader, the federal government has opened applications for the Artificial Intelligence Compute Access Fund, a program designed to help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) scale AI innovations by easing the financial burden of high-performance computing costs.

The fund—first announced earlier this year—will provide eligible businesses with up to $3.35 million in support for cloud-based compute services, allowing them to accelerate the commercialization of AI products. A special emphasis is placed on companies leveraging Canada-based cloud providers, signaling a strategic investment in domestic tech infrastructure.

This initiative comes at a critical time, as AI-driven startups and SMEs are navigating fierce global competition. For many, access to powerful compute resources can be the barrier between research and real-world application.

To qualify, organizations must be incorporated in Canada, have fewer than 500 full-time employees, and either be generating revenue or have secured Series A funding. Applicants must also demonstrate a robust AI commercialization plan with defined milestones, customer targets, and strategies for market scaling. Importantly, companies must already have a compute services agreement in place, with projected costs between $100,000 and $5 million over a three-year period.

The fund officially opened to applications on June 25, 2025, and will remain open until July 31, 2025.

“This fund addresses one of the most critical pain points for AI startups—affordable access to compute,” said an official familiar with the program. “It’s not just about financial support; it’s about giving Canadian SMEs the tools to lead in a fast-evolving global market.”

The launch signals Canada’s intent to remain at the forefront of ethical, high-impact AI development, building on its global reputation established through academic excellence and innovation hubs in cities like Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver.

Interested businesses are encouraged to act swiftly. For full eligibility details and to begin the application process, visit the official program portal.
