How to Discover a WHY That Moves You
Everyone wants purpose—but most people stop at the surface. They say things like, “I just want to help people” or “I want to make a difference.” While those are great intentions, they’re not your deepest why.
Your real why is personal, raw, and emotional. It’s usually born from your own life experiences—especially the hard ones.
To find it, ask yourself:
“Why is that important to me?”
Then ask it again. And again. Peel back the layers until you land on something that hits you emotionally.
According to Shawn Bearman, “A real why is short—like a sentence. And when it’s true for you, you’ll feel it in your body.”
Here’s an example: Someone might start with “I want to help people.” After some digging, it becomes “I never want anyone to feel invisible like I did.” Boom. That’s a why.
You can’t always get there on your own. Your best insights come in conversation, especially with someone trained to hear what you can’t. Coaches help reflect back what’s between your words and guide you to the truth under the noise.
Once you think you’ve found your why, test it:
- Say it out loud.
- Share it with someone.
- Notice your body. Do you feel grounded? Moved? Lit up?
If it lands, that’s the one.
