Judgement is a mind virus that drastically impacts the quality of our daily performance and our overall lives.

Dissipating judgement is key to moving forward with clarity and energy.

There's a simple – and accurate – phrase that allows us to wrap up any painful or destructive chapter kept alive by our judgement. And it works whether we're judging the conduct of ourselves or someone else. It allows us to see our current situation and understand the past clearly in a way that makes it easy to understand why we (or they) acted in a certain way. It can provide instant grace.

Here's how the magic begins: It seemed like a good idea at the time.

That phrase disarms judgment instantly because it acknowledges the missing piece in most of our self-criticism and/or resentment: context.

Every choice we’ve made, every mistake, every reaction was based on the information, emotions, and awareness available back then. Seen through that lens, even the worst decisions soften into understandable ones. Who amongst us can't relate to a bad decision and extend that understanding to another?

It seemed like a good idea at the time” isn’t an excuse. It’s a passage-way.

It releases the emotional charge that keeps old experiences looping in our heads. From that neutral ground, learning, understanding and grace becomes more than possible. This space of earnest neutrality makes forgiveness inevitable.

With this clear mind and a still heart, we can see what was missing without shame, and what we gained without denial. Best of all, we can extend this to others.

Freedom from judgement doesn’t come from pretending we’re flawless. It comes from remembering we’re human; learning, adapting, and doing the best we can with what we know in each moment.

A moment should never define us. But that's exactly the prison judgement sentences us to. Now we have a kind of get-out-of-jail-free card; but it's better than that. Because it’s not a card, it’s a phrase. One we can’t misplace or run out of. Use it, and what we lose isn’t our freedom, but our judgement.
