As the FIFA World Cup 2026™ approaches, fans preparing to attend matches in the United States face important travel documentation requirements. Understanding these requirements early is crucial for ensuring smooth entry into the host country.

The FIFA PASS Initiative

In mid-November 2024, a significant development emerged to assist international fans. US President Donald Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced the launch of FIFA PASS (FIFA Priority Appointment Scheduling System), designed to streamline the visa process for ticket holders travelling to the United States.

Beginning in early 2026, this system will provide World Cup ticket holders with priority access to visa interview appointments. This initiative particularly benefits fans from countries experiencing lengthy wait times for standard US visa appointments. Detailed instructions on accessing FIFA PASS will be distributed to ticket holders at the start of the new year.

However, fans shouldn't delay unnecessarily. Those from countries participating in the US Visa Waiver Program (ESTA) or countries with readily available visa appointments are encouraged to begin their applications immediately rather than waiting for FIFA PASS implementation.

Essential Visa Considerations

A critical point for all prospective attendees: holding a World Cup ticket doesn't guarantee visa approval or entry into the United States. Each traveller bears personal responsibility for understanding and fulfilling documentation and medical requirements.

The tournament spans three host nations—Canada, Mexico, and the United States—each with distinct entry requirements. Fans attending matches across multiple countries must ensure they have appropriate documentation for each destination. Processing times vary, making early application essential. Consulting immigration authorities or nearby embassies provides the most current and accurate information.

Expedited Entry Options

For those who already possess valid US visas, several Trusted Traveller Programs offer expedited clearance advantages:

Global Entry serves international travellers from select countries, providing fast-track processing at US airports. Some airports have enhanced this further with a mobile app that allows pre-arrival validation on iOS or Android devices, streamlining the entry process even more.

Mobile Passport Control is available at certain US airports for American citizens and Canadians travelling on B-1/B-2 visas. This free app enables travellers to submit travel documents, photos, and customs declarations via smartphone before arrival.

NEXUS caters to US and Canadian citizens and permanent residents, plus Mexican nationals enrolled in Mexico's Viajero Confiable program. NEXUS members can use dedicated kiosks when entering Canada by air and Global Entry kiosks at Canadian pre-clearance airports when heading to the United States.

Planning Ahead

With the World Cup drawing nearer, the time to act is now. Visa processing can take weeks or months depending on your country of origin and current appointment availability. Starting the application process early prevents last-minute complications that could jeopardize your tournament experience.

For fans planning to follow their teams across multiple host cities, consider which countries you'll be visiting and ensure you have the necessary documentation for each. The FIFA PASS system represents a positive step in facilitating international travel for this global sporting event, but personal preparation remains paramount.

Whether you're applying through traditional channels or will utilize FIFA PASS when it becomes available, thorough preparation and early action are your best strategies for ensuring you're in the stands when the matches begin.
