The great EV vs gas engine debate isn’t new—it’s just history on repeat. A century ago, the argument wasn’t Tesla vs Toyota—it was buggy whip vs automobile. And trust me, those conversations sounded awfully familiar.
Picture it: 1905. A group of gentlemen in bowler hats are standing outside the general store. One boasts about his new automobile. The others shake their heads.
“Sure, Henry, but where are you gonna refuel that contraption? There ain’t a gas station within a hundred miles!”
Another pipes up: “Besides, what about the jobs? What’s to become of the stable boys, the hay farmers, the blacksmiths who shoe the horses? Society will collapse!”
And of course, the kicker: “Horses are reliable. Never run out of fuel—just graze on the side of the road! That thing breaks down, you’re walking home.”
Fast forward 120 years, and here we are again. Instead of debating oats vs gasoline, it’s charging stations vs gas pumps. Instead of worrying about what happens to the blacksmith, we’re worried about what happens to the mechanic. And just like back then, we’ve got folks lamenting the “good old days”—conveniently forgetting that the streets of New York were ankle-deep in horse manure.
The truth is, change always stirs up resistance. People resist not because the new thing doesn’t work, but because it threatens what they know. Eventually, though, the market, the infrastructure, and the culture catch up—and the buggy whip makers fade into history.
So the next time someone grumbles about EVs, just smile and remind them: once upon a time, somebody thought horseless carriages were a passing fad.
Spoiler: they weren’t.
