Club Med was established in 1950 by Belgian entrepreneur Gérard Blitz, a former Olympic water polo player and resistance fighter who dreamed of creating a revolutionary vacation concept. Working with Gilbert Trigano, who supplied tents for the original resort, they launched their first village on the Spanish island of Majorca, introducing the groundbreaking idea of all-inclusive holidays where guests could enjoy sports, nature, and camaraderie without worrying about daily expenses.
What began as a modest tent village has evolved into a global hospitality empire. Today, Club Med operates 71 resorts worldwide, with two-thirds classified as 4-Trident and Luxury 5-Trident properties, spanning five continents from the Maldives to the French Alps. The company has been primarily owned by Chinese conglomerate Fosun Group since 2013, supporting its ambitious expansion strategy of opening three to five new resorts annually.
Safety remains a cornerstone of the Club Med experience. Resorts feature 24/7 on-site security, controlled access points, and surveillance systems, with security personnel regularly monitoring premises and controlling entry points. Guests sign in and out when leaving resort grounds, and management arranges transportation to ensure approved vehicles only. Many locations operate as gated communities with private beach areas, providing families peace of mind while they relax. Resort staff, particularly childcare professionals, receive training in first aid and emergency procedures, with on-site medical facilities available at most properties.
What distinguishes Club Med from competitors? The company pioneered the all-inclusive resort model, creating a unique culture built around their famous "Gentils Organisateurs" (GOs)—multilingual staff from over 110 nationalities who don't just work at resorts but live the experience alongside guests.
Originally attracting singles and young couples, Club Med became primarily a family destination after introducing the Mini Club in 1967, the industry's first comprehensive children's program. This signature blend of French sophistication, international service excellence, premium sports academies, and genuine multicultural hospitality creates an atmosphere where families can disconnect from daily life and reconnect with each other in some of the world's most stunning locations.
