Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming the way governments operate, and Canada is no exception. The responsible use of AI offers powerful opportunities to enhance public services, increase efficiency, and better meet the evolving needs of Canadians. But with great potential comes great responsibility. That’s why the Government of Canada is adopting a comprehensive AI Strategy—to harness the benefits of AI while mitigating the risks.
AI can streamline routine administrative tasks, freeing public servants to focus on more complex responsibilities. It enables faster data analysis, more informed decision-making, and new levels of innovation in public policy, scientific discovery, and citizen engagement. For example, generative AI tools now embedded in commercial software are making advanced capabilities more accessible to non-technical users across departments.
Yet, this advancement comes with critical challenges. From ethical concerns and talent shortages to cybersecurity threats and the need for interdepartmental coordination, managing AI in government requires a careful, measured approach. Without a clear framework, the misuse or mismanagement of AI could erode public trust and jeopardize Canada’s digital sovereignty.
The AI Strategy aims to ensure all AI systems used within the federal government are aligned with Canadian values, human rights, and national security. This includes being transparent with the public about when and how AI is used, building systems that are fair and accountable, and ensuring public servants are equipped with the training and tools they need for safe deployment.
The strategy also underscores collaboration—with Indigenous communities, national and international partners, and across departments—and emphasizes the need for readiness. That means having the right infrastructure, data, policies, and culture in place to support innovation without compromising safety or security.
Ultimately, the vision is clear: by adopting AI responsibly, Canada can become a global leader in ethical digital governance, delivering world-class public services, protecting national interests, and accelerating progress in ways that benefit everyone.
Responsible AI use isn't just a technical priority—it's a national imperative.
