Canada is set to showcase why it's regarded as the world's best sporting host nation in 2026, with an impressive lineup of international events spanning from coast to coast. The year promises to deliver world-class competition across multiple disciplines, reinforcing the country's reputation for successfully organizing major athletic gatherings.
Secretary of State for Sport Adam van Koeverden emphasizes Canada's exceptional hosting capabilities as the nation prepares for its busiest sporting calendar in years. The crown jewel of 2026's events is undoubtedly the FIFA World Cup, running from June 11 to July 19, which Canada is co-hosting alongside the United States and Mexico. Canada will host 13 matches in Toronto and Vancouver, bringing the world's most popular sporting tournament to Canadian soil for the first time in the modern era.
Underscoring the scale and significance of the tournament, FIFA has appointed Richard Ryan as Director of Security for the FIFA World Cup 2026. Ryan brings extensive experience from over two decades with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, including senior roles as Legal Attaché and Special Agent in Charge overseeing international operations across the Middle East, North Africa, and China.
Most recently, he served as Executive Director of Security on a major development project in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In his new role, Ryan will coordinate security planning across tournament venues, hospitality locations, and pavilions throughout the United States, Mexico, and Canada—one of the largest security operations for an international sporting event in North American history.
Beyond soccer's global showcase, Vancouver continues its tradition as a premier rugby destination by hosting the HSBC SVNS tournament on March 7-8 at BC Place. This fast-paced, high-energy event attracts elite sevens teams from around the world and has become a beloved fixture on the international rugby calendar.
In Canada's North, Whitehorse, Yukon, will welcome athletes from across the circumpolar region for the Arctic Winter Games from March 8-15. Nearly 2,000 athletes and cultural participants will represent eight contingents including Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Alaska, Northern Alberta, Nunavik, Sápmi, and Greenland. The Games celebrate not just athletic excellence but also the unique culture and spirit of northern communities.
Montreal will take centre stage in the cycling world when it hosts the UCI Road World Championships from September 20-27. The event is expected to draw close to 500,000 cycling enthusiasts and will mark only the second time Montreal has hosted this prestigious championship, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the city's 1976 Olympics.
These marquee events represent far more than athletic competition. They're opportunities for Canada to demonstrate organizational excellence, infrastructure quality, and the warm hospitality that has made the nation synonymous with successful sport hosting. As van Koeverden noted, while bids for future Olympics and Pan American Games are led by the Canadian Olympic Committee rather than Sport Canada, the collective effort across all levels continues to position Canada as the destination of choice for international sporting events.
From rugby sevens in Vancouver to cycling in Montreal, soccer in Toronto and cultural sport in Whitehorse, Canada's 2026 calendar proves that excellence in sport hosting knows no boundaries.
