In May 2025, Pacific Economic Development Canada (PacifiCan) announced a $1.8 million investment into artificial intelligence (AI) projects across British Columbia. These initiatives, delivered in partnership with the Province of B.C. and Innovate BC, are part of the broader Regional AI Initiative, which supports homegrown innovation and smart public services.
One of the standout projects is the launch of Cruz mobility pods at Vancouver International Airport (YVR). Developed by Vancouver-based A&K Robotics, these AI-powered, self-driving pods are being piloted at YVR to support travelers with mobility and guidance needs. Whether it’s someone on crutches, an expectant mother, or a senior with limited mobility, these pods provide more independence and ease of access across Canada’s largest airport terminal building.
The Cruz pods feature real-time mapping software, enabling users to intuitively understand their location and navigate toward gates, shops, restaurants, or accessible washrooms. Trials are being conducted in phases with airport staff, the accessibility community, and eventually the public, ensuring the technology is both effective and inclusive.
YVR’s main terminal stretches over 650 metres from security to the last boarding gate in the International Terminal. While moving walkways are available, YVR is committed to constant innovation in accessibility and partnered with Innovate BC’s Integrated Marketplace to make this vision a reality. The Integrated Marketplace connects local tech companies like A&K Robotics with large industry buyers and real-world testing environments, helping them refine and scale their innovations.
In addition to airport accessibility, PacifiCan is also supporting the development of AI pathology imaging systems for hospitals across the province. These systems use advanced algorithms to detect diseases earlier and with greater accuracy, improving healthcare outcomes and supporting overburdened medical teams.
“B.C. is home to incredible companies that are developing innovative technology and practical solutions that can make people’s lives better,” said Brenda Bailey, Minister of Jobs, Economic Development and Innovation. “Through the Integrated Marketplace, we’re helping A&K Robotics continue to grow while supporting people living with mobility challenges.”
Together, these projects signal a new era in AI-powered infrastructure and services—where innovation meets real-world impact for British Columbians.
