Two years after the public launch of ChatGPT, businesses are still grappling with how to turn generative AI hype into measurable returns. While sectors like media, healthcare, and finance continue to experiment, one area is quietly emerging as a clear winner: software development.
According to a new report released today by global consultancy McKinsey & Company, generative AI has cut software development times by as much as 35%, leading to faster product releases, leaner dev teams, and significant cost savings. Companies using tools like GitHub Copilot, Amazon CodeWhisperer, and OpenAI’s Codex-enabled copilots report tangible productivity gains, particularly in code refactoring, bug fixing, and documentation.
"This is the first concrete evidence of enterprise-scale ROI for generative AI," said Dr. Elisa Ramos, lead author of the McKinsey report. "While other industries are still piloting, tech firms are already deploying AI copilots in production environments."
Startups and tech giants alike are doubling down. Microsoft confirmed this morning that over 50% of its internal code commits now involve AI-assisted input. Meanwhile, Atlassian revealed that its new AI-enhanced Jira is driving a 28% increase in engineering throughput across client teams.
Despite fears about job displacement, the tools are largely augmenting rather than replacing developers. "AI helps us ship faster, but it doesn’t replace human judgment," said Arjun Patel, CTO of Vancouver-based startup DynaFlux.
While broader ROI remains elusive in many fields, software engineering may prove to be the proving ground that justifies the hype. As one developer put it: “It’s not perfect, but I wouldn’t code without it anymore.”
With billions still pouring into AI research, stakeholders are watching closely to see whether success in software marks a turning point—or an outlier.
