Namibia’s gold exploration sector is entering a potentially significant new chapter as Canadian-listed Ongwe Minerals prepares to drill 5,000 metres at its promising Nguni prospect, where a gold-in-soil anomaly has expanded to an impressive six kilometres.
The development comes after fresh exploration results strengthened the evidence of an extensive mineralized system beneath the surface. The newly identified Nguni prospect has produced a continuous six-kilometre gold anomaly, extending the more than five-kilometre zone initially reported when the discovery was announced in June.
Ongwe Minerals’ latest intensive soil sampling campaign delivered further encouragement. Fifty samples returned gold values above 300 parts per billion, while the strongest assay reached 1,310 parts per billion.
With those results in hand, the company is now preparing for its maiden 5,000-metre diamond drilling programme in August. Reverse-circulation drilling will also be carried out as Ongwe Minerals begins the critical next stage of testing at Nguni.
The drilling campaign represents the first major opportunity to establish whether the extensive gold anomaly identified at surface continues underground. Its results could provide important clues about the size, continuity and potential significance of the mineralized system.
The scale of the exploration target has already placed Nguni firmly on the radar as Ongwe Minerals works to understand what lies beneath the surface. The combination of a six-kilometre anomaly, multiple high-value soil samples and the planned drilling programme gives the project an important platform for further exploration.
For Namibia, developments such as Nguni underline the country’s continuing mineral potential and the role exploration can play in attracting investment, strengthening the mining sector and creating future economic opportunities.
However, the project remains at the exploration stage, and drilling will be crucial in determining whether the surface indications translate into a significant underground gold discovery.
For now, expectations are building as the first major holes are prepared.
