Africa’s third-richest man, Abdulsamad Rabiu, is leading BUA Foods into its most ambitious expansion yet, positioning the company to become Nigeria’s largest food business while boosting local production, creating jobs, and helping ease food prices.
The expansion spans key areas of the food value chain, including flour milling, sugar refining, domestic sugar production through its backward integration programme, edible oil processing, animal feed, and a new noodles manufacturing business. The projects are expected to be completed next year, significantly increasing the company’s production capacity.
Speaking about the vision behind the investment, Rabiu said, “We are expanding across the food value chain. Once these projects are completed next year, BUA Foods will become the largest food business in Nigeria. With that scale and capacity, we believe we will be able to support lower food prices because increased production remains the most sustainable way to reduce costs.”
The expansion comes at a time when Nigeria continues to face rising food costs and increasing demand for locally produced staples. By investing in larger production facilities and integrated manufacturing, BUA Foods aims to improve food availability while strengthening national food security. New facilities under development include an oil milling plant in Port Harcourt, alongside feed milling and noodles production operations.
Rabiu also reaffirmed the company's long-term commitment to Nigeria's economy, saying, “We will continue to play our part in advancing Nigeria’s economic growth.” He added that BUA remains focused on investing in the country, creating employment opportunities, and supporting industrial development despite economic challenges.
The expansion is more than a business milestone. It reflects growing confidence in local manufacturing and the belief that increased production can help improve affordability for millions of families. As BUA Foods scales its operations, the ripple effects are expected to reach farmers, workers, suppliers, and consumers across the country.
With sustained investment, stronger production capacity, and a commitment to long-term growth, BUA Foods is helping shape a future where more Nigerians have access to affordable food while creating new opportunities for communities to thrive.
