School bells are about to ring again, and with them comes a shift that touches far more than students and parents — it reaches commuters, employers, and entire communities. As the new school year begins next week, here's what everyone should prepare for.

1. Traffic Will Pick Up — Fast

School-zone congestion returns almost overnight. Streets that have been quiet through the summer will suddenly see a surge of activity during morning and afternoon drop-off and pick-up windows. Commuters whose routes pass near schools should build in extra travel time starting next week, and businesses near school zones may want to plan deliveries and appointments around the busiest hours.

2. Family Routines Are Shifting

For many employees, colleagues, and clients, the return to school means a return to rigid morning and afternoon schedules built around drop-offs and pick-ups — less flexibility for early meetings, sudden calls, or last-minute changes. At the same time, some parents are facing the opposite adjustment: an empty nest, as their only child heads off to school for the first time. Employers and colleagues who stay mindful of both realities will find it easier to keep communication smooth during the transition.

3. More Bikes, Scooters, and Young Drivers on the Road

Alongside the usual school traffic, expect a noticeable rise in bikes, e-scooters, and student drivers as high school and post-secondary students head back to campus. Many will be sharing the road for the first time this season, so drivers should stay especially alert during peak commuting hours in the weeks ahead.

4. Last Call for Summer's Outdoor Spaces

This week is also the final stretch for many outdoor amenities that wind down after Labour Day — outdoor pools, lifeguard-supervised beaches, and other seasonal outdoor spaces will be closing or scaling back. For anyone hoping to squeeze in one more swim or beach day, now is the time.

5. The Last Calm Before the Fall Marathon

This week represents the final pocket of slower-paced time before the season shifts into high gear. Back-to-school sales and last-minute vacation deals are still available, but once the new week begins, there's no real break in the calendar until the December holidays. What follows is a genuine fall marathon — packed with school events, work deadlines, and end-of-year planning — making this week a good moment to finish up personal errands, get ahead on projects, or simply take a breath before the pace picks up.
