Curated by Jarrett Martineau, VIFF Live 2026 revolves around the thematic anchor of "reworlding." The programming invites audiences into radically reimagined ways of experiencing media, brought to life by artists pushing past traditional genre boundaries.
"VIFF Live is stretching the boundaries of time, space, form, and genre to make room for daring, unconventional, and singular creative voices who boldly challenge formal limits and histories," says Martineau. "From avant electronica and Indigenous psychedelia to next-generation digital tastemakers and lavish orchestral film scores, this year's program offers a wide-ranging series of unique events and experiences."
Premieres, Orchestral Suites, and Cult Reimagining
The 10 live experiences feature an impressive array of Canadian and North American debuts, high-profile collaborations, and rare masterclasses:
- Symphonic Cinema: In partnership with the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts, VIFF Live will present the North American premiere of Jóhann Jóhannsson’s Cinematic Suites: The Denis Villeneuve Scores, performed live by a full orchestra.
- Festival Firsts: VIFF marks its inaugural collaboration with Montreal’s pioneering electronic music and digital arts festival, MUTEK.
- Indigenous Futurism & Northern Voices: The Canadian premiere of the immersive Arctic film TAKKUUK brings live performances by Inuit throat-singing duo Silla and Greenlandic rapper Tarrak.
- Exclusive Premieres: Experimental music duo Los Thuthanaka makes their Canadian debut, while tastemaker Derrick Gee brings the North American debut of his Radio Hour. Additionally, fans of anarchic electronic music can catch the North American premiere of The KLF: 23 Seconds to Eternity, a brand-new compilation of the duo’s complete film and video archive.
- Cult Classics & Audiovisual Sets: Experimental band Xiu Xiu delivers their hallucinatory live score with ERASERHEAD XIU XIU, while acclaimed pianist Kelly Moran offers a rare live audiovisual performance.
- Anniversaries & Masterclasses: A 30th-anniversary presentation of The Last Angel of History features a live performance by Speaker Music alongside a panel conversation with DeForrest Brown Jr. and Otolith Group co-founders Kodwo Eshun and Anjalika Sagar. Rounding out the intimate artist access is a masterclass with Emmy and BAFTA-winning composer Cristóbal Tapia de Veer (The White Lotus).
