Canada Lifts Cap on Passport Renewals
Canada removes its online passport renewal cap as of July 28, 2026 — all eligible adults can now renew digitally, anytime, no daily limit.

Starting July 28, 2026, every eligible adult Canadian citizen with a home and mailing address in Canada can renew a passport entirely online, at any time — no more racing the clock for a limited daily slot. Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab announced the change in Vancouver, framing it as part of a broader push to modernize federal services and cut barriers to access.
The cap itself dates back to the online renewal service's launch as a small pilot in December 2024, when Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) accepted just a handful of applications a day. The daily limit reset twice, at 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time, and it grew gradually as the system proved itself: 1,000 applications a day by October 2025, 1,250 by March 2026, and 1,500 by June 2026.

The logic was caution rather than restriction — a new digital system handling passports, photos, and payments needed to be stress-tested in stages so IRCC could catch errors and monitor performance before opening the floodgates.
By July 2026, IRCC judged the platform stable enough to remove the cap altogether. For Canadians already holding a passport, this mostly means convenience: renewals can now be submitted whenever it's needed, without competing for a window, with a target processing time of about 20 business days and a "30 days or free" service guarantee.
It's worth noting this change is about passport renewal, not citizenship applications — eligibility rules haven't shifted, and the service still excludes first-time applicants, minors, and Canadians living abroad, who must still apply by mail or in person. Older or first-time passport holders and new citizens, then, see no direct change here; the benefit lands squarely on existing passport holders renewing an eligible document.
